Along one of the many busy streets in Taipan, Dae Jang Gum has been serving more than just food; it has been a home to authentic Korean cuisine lovers for the past two decades. Named after the iconic Korean TV series about an orphaned kitchen cook, “Jewel in the Palace” (Dae Jang-geum), this unique establishment has stood out for its dedication to traditional flavours and a personal story that binds it closely to its patrons. While there are other restaurants that might share a similar name, Dae Jang Gum in Taipan has prided itself on being one-of-a-kind, with no other branches to its name.
However, the tides of change have come for Dae Jang Gum, stirred by the unpredictable waves of real estate in Taipan. Last year, the news came that the building’s previous landlord wished to sell, a decision driven by the soaring property prices in the area. With the transition to a new owner, James was informed in January 2024 that his tenancy agreement would not be renewed, forcing him to face the reality of relocation once his current lease expires at the end of March.

When we last visited Dae Jang Gum to enjoy the food, James explained that the move will certainly be a challenge, as he’ll need to deal with the cost of relocation, along with navigating the process of applying for a business license in a different town council, the Majlis Perbandaran Kuala Langat.
As we prepare to say goodbye to Dae Jang Gum’s familiar storefront in Subang Jaya, its last day of operation in Taipan will be on on March 25th and the moving process set for the following day, there’s a bittersweet air of farewell and anticipation. The aim is to welcome patrons old and new in Rimbayu starting April 1st, turning a new leaf while continuing to dish out the beloved flavours that have become synonymous with Dae Jang Gum.
In a heartfelt message to the community, James shared his and his family’s gratitude, expressing, “Thank you to the customers who have loved Dae Jang Gum so far. We will do our best to our customers with the same taste and kindness at Rimbayu. See you soon in Rimbayu.”
