Toxic behaviour

Table of Contents

As the size of our community continues to grow, the dynamics within our community evolves too.

There has been some toxic behaviour going around the community for a while, and I have not been proactive enough to put a stop to it. The unfortunate result is that I’ve seen evidence of members receiving pretty unpleasant messages. I’ve received complaints from folks as far as Ampang, noting that some comments are becoming quite toxic, and I agree.

While I understand everybody has different expectations of etiquette, there is still a common baseline in society, and at the very least, we should not go below that. We should still strive to be good citizens. Our community isn’t going to be a very nice place if a few bad actors are allowed to go around and make it uncomfortable for the rest of us. The bad actors will be always be removed once they exhibit such behaviour.

I think the group rules in the Facebook community are pretty self-explanatory, but I’ll add some examples here too.

Rude comments and messages

Repeated targeting of a business that you’re unhappy with

If you disagree with the price or style of food, there is no need to repeatedly comment to stress your point anytime someone shares about that business. If you’ve voiced your displeasure before, it’s noted and you can move on.

Cursing businesses to fail

Business owners are trying to survive in a competitive environment, I don’t think we gain anything by cursing that they will close down, and many business owners do take issue with such comments.

I don’t think it’s proper to try and get employees fired, and in a similar vein, I don’t think it’s nice that we curse that businesses close down. It’s easy for us to make comments as consumers, but for the business owner, it’s their livelihood and food on the table for their family. I can’t imagine what we personally gain by spreading negativity about others in our community.

Feel free to vote with your wallet and stop patronising a store that you don’t like, there is nothing wrong with that.

Conclusion

I hope this helps to make our community a more welcoming place, and together make the food scene in Subang a better place.
